14 Brain Boosting Superfoods

by Adrian Nita

Improving your cognitive functionality means improving your quality of life. While researching the food habits of the wealthy, I discovered they are more likely to have superfoods in their diet. You can have these in your diet too.

I’ve compiled a list of superfoods that have been found to improve your memory, give you better focus, and boost your overall brain power.

Bee Pollen

Bee pollen has almost all the nutrients humans need and is considered to be one of nature’s most nourishing foods. These pollens are rich in proteins, vitamins (including B-complex), folic acid, and free amino acids.

Increase your energy – Carbohydrates, protein, and B vitamins give you more energy, decrease fatigue, and improve your stamina.

Boost your immune system – Rich in antioxidants that protect your cells from free radicals, which, when oxidized, can damage brain cells. Bee pollen has also been found to stabilize your metabolism and digestive system.

Smoother skin – the amino acids and vitamins help in cell regeneration and protecting the skin.

Kiwi

Kiwis are loaded with Vitamin C. Just one Kiwi has 110 percent of your daily needs. Other possible health benefits range from maintaining skin tone to reducing blood pressure.

E3 Live

E3 Live is a blue-green algae that helps increase energy, reduce stress, and balance blood sugar levels. It is the highest food source of chlorophyll, and it has been found to improve mental clarity and creativity.

Other benefits include stronger nails, smoother skin, and silkier hair.

Blueberries

Blueberries are on nearly every superfood list you find. Why? They are awesome! Seriously. They are rich in antioxidants, have been found to enhance memory and improve learning abilities. They are even believed to reduce age-related decline, preventing such diseases as Alzheimer’s.

They improve memory by protecting your brain from inflammation and better the communication between your brain cells.

Wild Salmon

Omega-3 fatty acids support your heart and brain health. They are necessary for human health, and your body cannot make them. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Omega-3s play a crucial role in cognitive functions – brain memory and performance.

Wild Salmon is rich in Omega-3s. If you are able to, buy the ocean fish instead of farmed salmon, which does not have as high a level of the necessary fatty acids. If you eat just a light 3 oz. of wild salmon, you’ll get all the omega-3s you need in a day.

Spirulinaspirulina

Spirulina is an herbal supplement that is believed to be an ideal anti-aging food.  With ten times the beta carotene of carrots, this supplement could be great for healthy eyes and vision. As complete protein – it contains an adequate proportion of all nine essential amino acids – it is used by athletes to improve stamina and immunity levels.

Add it into a fruit shake, and it is hardly noticeable. Spirulina is pricey and a challenge to find in high-quality form. As a green superfood, people go nuts over it. Here is the best one I found on Amazon.

Olive Oil

Olive Oil is a great source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Loaded with antioxidants, it helps protect the brain against oxidative stress. It is great to fry with and tastes great when sprinkled on your salad.

Avocados

Avocados have a healthy fat that helps you absorb other nutrients. They improve your blood flow and blood pressure, which helps all parts of the body, especially the brain. Worth trying: grill avocado halves with olive oil and serve with a red onion and balsamic vinegar.

Flax Seeds

Flax seeds are loaded with plant omega-3s and, most importantly, lignans which have antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods. Research has indicated that flax may reduce the risk of certain cancers as well as cardiovascular and lung disease.

Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate contains endorphins, which can improve your mood and is rich in antioxidants. Who wouldn’t love an ounce of chocolate a day? It may not taste as good as milk chocolate, but some kinds are delicious (like this one). A happier person is a more productive person!

Walnuts

Walnuts can provide you with your daily dose of alpha-linolenic acid – an omega-three that has been shown to improve memory and coordination. For men, Walnuts have been found to improve semen quality. Of all the things… nuts!

Almonds

Almonds are delicious, and they improve your skin. But most importantly, they have been found to improve memory and lower cholesterol. Almonds were found to decrease the levels of an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter improves attention and awareness.

Acai Juiceacai juice

A glass of this anthocyanin-rich berry juice can boost the amount of antioxidants in your blood. Better blood = better brain. Acai juice can boost your energy, can be found in most food stores, and is great for nourishing your brain and body.

It has a combination of antioxidants, amino acids, and omega fatty acids that help slow the aging process and boost the immune system – in Brazil, Acai is nicknamed the “beauty berry”.

Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are a great source of vitamin E, selenium, manganese, and many other useful vitamins and minerals. They have anti-oxidative qualities and, like almonds, are great for improving memory, attention, and awareness.
